Location: New York City, USA
Cuisine: American Jewish

Certain New York institutions feel bigger than a meal. Russ & Daughters is one of them. Founded in 1914 on the Lower East Side, this century-old appetising shop has built its reputation on smoked fish, bagels, and traditional Jewish specialities. It is often described as a must-visit. The real question is whether it still deserves that status in a city overflowing with good bagels and good salmon.

After a long travel day, it was exactly where we wanted to start.
What We Ordered
Victor and I shared two classics:
- An open-faced bagel with Gaspe Nova smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomato, onion, and capers
- The herring plate, served with a trio of sauces and slices of pumpernickel
If you are going to judge a place like Russ & Daughters, you judge it on the fish. The Gaspe Nova was beautifully sliced, supple and almost silky, with just enough smoke to give it depth without overwhelming its natural sweetness. It had that clean, buttery quality that makes you slow down mid-bite. The cream cheese was generously applied but not excessively, acting as a quiet, tangy backdrop rather than the main event.

The balance was what impressed me most. The onion added bite, the capers gave saline pops, and the tomato kept everything fresh. Nothing was ornamental. Everything had a role.
The herring plate was the surprise highlight. Each preparation had its own personality, from lightly sweet to sharper and more acidic. Spread onto dark pumpernickel, the richness of the fish met the bread’s earthiness in a way that felt deeply traditional and satisfying. It was the kind of dish that reminds you that preservation techniques once existed out of necessity, not trend.
The Atmosphere
Walking into the Orchard Street shop feels like stepping into living history. The narrow space hums with movement. Staff in white coats move briskly behind glass counters lined with gleaming slabs of salmon and rows of prepared salads. There is no performative minimalism here. It is efficient, old-school, and unapologetically itself.

Is It Worth It?
In a city where you can find excellent bagels on nearly every corner, Russ & Daughters stands out not because it is trendy, but because it is precise. The fish quality is exceptional, and the proportions are thoughtful. The experience feels rooted rather than manufactured for visitors.
Would I wait in a long line? Within reason, yes. Would I go out of my way for it? Absolutely. In a city that changes constantly, Russ & Daughters feels anchored. And sometimes, that is exactly what you want at the start of a New York morning.
