O Retorno: A Taste of Galicia in Barcelona

Location: Barcelona, Spain

Some restaurants feel like good recommendations, while others feel like discoveries that stay with you long after the meal ends. We first went to O Retorno in summer 2025 with friends who were visiting Barcelona, following a recommendation from a London-based foodie whose suggestions I trust completely. He rarely misses, and this was no exception. O Retorno is not just a single restaurant but something of a small empire, with a few spaces clustered around the same block. It feels established and confident, the kind of place that knows exactly what it is and sees no reason to change. We went for dinner that first time, and there was never any debate about what to order. Pulpo was a given.

Galician food carries a very different identity from Catalan cuisine. Where Catalonia leans into Mediterranean brightness, olive oil, and tomatoes, Galicia feels shaped by the Atlantic. The flavours are deeper, the seafood colder and sweeter, the cooking heartier but grounded in exceptional produce. In September 2019, Victor, his parents, and I spent ten days travelling through Galicia, moving between coastal towns and inland villages. We ate pulpo at local fairs, empanada gallega from bakeries, and grilled seafood overlooking dramatic stretches of coastline. What stayed with me most from that trip was the clarity of the food. It was never complicated. It was about the ingredient and the respect given to it.

Finding O Retorno in Barcelona felt like rediscovering a small piece of that experience. On that first visit in 2025, the table quickly filled with classics. The pulpo a la gallega arrived tender and generous, dressed simply with olive oil, paprika, and salt. The texture was exactly as it should be, firm without being tough, yielding without collapsing. We ordered zamburiñas, small scallops grilled until lightly caramelised, their natural sweetness shining through without distraction. Those quickly became one of my favourite dishes here, delicate but deeply flavourful.

We returned in January 2026, this time with Victor’s parents. It was their second visit as well, having come back on their own after we recommended it to them. That kind of independent return always feels like the highest compliment a restaurant can receive. Once again, we ordered pulpo and zamburiñas, adding almejas and grilled gambas to the table. The clams were briny and clean, served in a light sauce that called for bread, while the gambas were plump, sweet, and faintly smoky from the grill. Of everything we ate that evening, the gambas and the zamburiñas stood out most for me, both showcasing the quality of the produce without unnecessary embellishment.

Galician cuisine is often described as hearty, and it certainly can be, with its stews and generous portions. But there is also refinement in its simplicity, a quiet confidence that comes from knowing the product is strong enough to carry the plate. At O Retorno, that balance is evident throughout the menu. The room feels traditional rather than trendy, and the focus remains squarely on seafood that tastes as though it has travelled directly from the Atlantic to your table.

Barcelona has no shortage of excellent restaurants, including many that specialise in seafood. Yet O Retorno offers something slightly different. It brings the identity of northern Spain into a Mediterranean city without dilution. For those who have travelled to Galicia, it feels familiar and comforting. For those who have not, it offers an introduction to a region whose culinary traditions are shaped by ocean, weather, and a deep respect for the sea. For us, it has become more than a recommendation. It is a reminder of a ten-day trip in 2019, of coastal towns and long lunches, and proof that sometimes you can find a small echo of the Atlantic even in the heart of Barcelona.
